Here are some readership figures for the NME magazine. As shown the NME magazine has a predominately male audience, this is probably because the Indie rock genre is most popular with young adult males. However there are still a large amount of females that read the magazine. The NME uses a minimalist style and plain colour schemes to help it come across as a magazine that appeals to both genders, this is also in the style of Indie rock and therefore to fans of the genre as well. About half of the magazines readership are not employed and a large amount are still studying, it is easy to understand why the NME is a free online magazine when looking at this statistic. A very large percentage of its readership don't have a large amount of disposable income and therefore would not be able to or not willing to spend money on a music magazine. The NME also has a very low average age, it is harder for younger people to go out and buy magazines and they also have very little disposable income. Young people are also renowned for being the biggest consumers of social media and other online services so it would make sense for the NME to move online because that's where its readership is.

These are some statistics on the Rollingstone readership. Rollingstone magazine has a mostly male readership profile. This may be because Rollingstone features a lot of music more popular with males such as rock. Rollingstone targets males in many different ways, for example its masthead uses a unique font that is very reminiscent of the 60's/70's rock era which is very popular with males, the name 'Rollingstone' also suggests this. The average age of the Rollingstone readership will also back this up as the readers are slightly older and therefore will not be as interested in newer music like the readers of the NME. A large majority, if not all, of Rollingstone covers feature an image of a well established band or musician that is popular with males in this age bracket. That is not to say that Rollingstone does not try to attract females as it also features popular female icons on the covers and uses similar font styles and page layouts as magazines such as Vogue which are very popular amongst females. A large majority of this magazines readership are employed and will therefore have disposable income to spend which justify's the publications price of £6.92 per issue. Although expensive this price makes Rollingstone a successful magazine as its readership are able to afford to buy it, unlike the NME magazine who's had to move online because its readership didn't have as much disposable income.

This is some data on the Q magazine readership Q magazine appeals to a large group of people who are fans of music in general rather than fans of one particular genre.Although mostly read by males Q's readership is also largely made up of females. Q appeals to both genders, like the NME, by using a minimalist style that doesn't largely appeal to one group, such as Rollingstone's masthead. Q uses a very simple and neutral colour scheme that appeals to everybody, it carries this theme through out the magazine and so keeps the appeal. It uses cover images of both male and female stars from a range of different music genres so it appeals to a wide group of people. Like the Rollingstone, Q has an older average reader. To appeal to people of this age Q also features articles about well established artists and bands. This appeals more to older people as they are not to fussed about discovering music such as the younger readers of the NME, they just want to read about bands they have heard of and read general articles about music. People of this age bracket also generally have more disposable income and therefore are able to afford hard copies of magazines which suggests why Q is still going strong. Overall Q's simple style and wide range of appeal makes it successful with its readership.
